Shalom World wins Catholic Press Association’s Gabriel Awards in 5 categories


 

In what is seen as a stamp of recognition for excellence in digital media and the stellar contributions made to global evangelization, Shalom World has won the prestigious Gabriel Awards instituted by the Catholic Press Association (CPA) of USA and Canada in five categories this year.

 

Shalom World bagged the first prize in the ‘Religious Order’ category, which features videos that create awareness on the missionary endeavors of religious congregations. It was the program named ‘Wellspring’ on the Missionary Sisters of the Queen of the Apostles that came first in this category. The program unravels the selfless service rendered by these nuns in the slums of Uganda in Africa where they see Christ in the less fortunate people and uplift them with education and healthcare.

 

In the ‘Single News Category’, our program titled ‘Child of the Eucharist’ clinched the first prize. This program brings before viewers the amazing life of Italian teenager Carlo Acutis who was beatified in October last year. Acutis was an amateur computer programmer who led a life of extraordinary sanctity. His great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament made him chronicle Eucharistic miracles on the internet before he died of leukemia at the age of 15 in 2006.

 

In the third category on ‘Religious Places’, Shalom World’s  ‘Journal’ on the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Wisconsin in the US came second. It introduces viewers to the Marian sanctuary in Wisconsin where Our Lady is believed to have appeared to a Belgian immigrant woman named Adele Brise in October 1859 praying for the conversion of sinners. At this site of the apparition, which is deemed worthy of belief by the Church, thousands of believers come seeking solace and healing.

 

‘God’s Crazy People’, which pays tribute to the ‘full timers’ of the Jesus Youth Ministry who travel to distant lands with the Gospel, found an Honorable Mention in the ‘Youth Program’ category.

 

In a similar manner, Shalom World’s ‘Glorious Lives’ program on Angelena Lyaka, who is known as the Maria Goretti of Uganda, also found an ‘Honorable Mention’ in the ‘Documentary’ category. It sheds light on the fascinating life of a heroic and saintly Ugandan teenage girl who sacrificed her life while protecting her chastity in the early half of the 20th century.

 

Formed in 1911, the Catholic Press Association (CPA) of USA and Canada has instituted several awards to honor media outfits that boost the growth of the Church through their programs. Among them, Gabriel Awards occupy pride of place. This year’s awards will be handed over at the annual conference of the press association in June.
